Gum treatment focuses on the inflammatory condition that destroys the supporting structures of the gums and the teeth. A periodontist specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of periodontal disease that affects the gums and the placement of dental implants.

Periodontal Disease

Periodontal disease (also known as gum disease) is an infection of the tissues that keep your teeth in place. It is caused mainly by incorrect brushing and flossing habits, which allow plaque - a sticky film of bacteria, to accumulate and harden on the teeth. Periodontal disease, in its late stages, can cause sore and bleeding gums, chewing problems, and even tooth loss.

Treatment of Periodontitis and Gingivitis

Gum or periodontal diseases are typically caused by plaque accumulation on the teeth and under the gum line. The buildup of plaque and tartar can cause a host of issues, including infections. In certain cases, the periodontist may prescribe antibiotics for these infections or carry out surgical procedures. 

Other treatment options include the following:

• Scaling is done to clean the teeth and remove the plaque and tartar that have accumulated above and below the gum line.
• Root planing is done to smooth uneven surfaces and remove microorganisms that cause infection. We'll clean the gum line all the way down to the roots.
• Antibiotics like Arestin may be prescribed to treat periodontitis. 
• When periodontitis has progressed to the point that the surrounding bones have been damaged, bone grafting can be used to support the diseased tooth and prevent tooth loss.

The treatment addresses receding gums by covering the exposed roots, which reduces sensitivity, helps protect against tooth decay, and stops further recession.

Surgery for Crown Lengthening

This procedure is performed to reshape the excess gums and bone tissue to alter the appearance of a gummy smile or to create a healthy space between the gums, teeth, and bone.
