Looking for next-level oral cleaning experience? Discover the power of Guided Biofilm Therapy(GBT) offered at Rand Center for Dentistry.

If you’re looking for a next-level oral cleaning experience, Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) offers a modern, science-backed, and remarkably gentle way to remove harmful biofilm and protect your oral health. Rand Center for Dentistry is proud to be one of the few offices in Flanders offering this advanced hygiene method.
GBT is a state-of-the-art dental cleaning system that combines air polishing, ultrasonic instrumentation, and biofilm-disclosing technology. It allows your hygienist to identify, target, and precisely remove bacterial buildup—even in hard-to-reach areas—without discomfort or damage to teeth or gums.
Current research shows that the main goal of dental hygiene is complete biofilm disruption, as this is what drives gum inflammation, cavities, periodontal disease, and peri-implant issues. GBT achieves this by:
Biofilm is a soft, sticky, living layer of bacteria that forms on teeth, gums, dental restorations, and even under the gumline. It’s the invisible film you often feel on your teeth when you wake up in the morning. Although it may seem harmless, biofilm is the primary cause of many oral diseases and requires targeted removal to protect your smile.
Bacteria inside biofilm produce toxins and acids that irritate the gums and damage tooth structure. Over time, this leads to inflammation, decay, tissue breakdown, and bone loss.
Biofilm is the driving force behind disease. Removing it first allows your hygienist to clean more gently, improve visibility, and prevent both tooth decay and gum disease. This principle is the foundation of Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT).

AIRFLOW® PLUS Powder is an advanced erythritol-based powder used during GBT to remove biofilm and early calculus gently and effectively—above and below the gumline. With an ultra-fine 14-micron particle size, it provides superior cleaning with minimal abrasion.

Rand Center for Dentistry proudly offers Guided Biofilm Therapy (GBT) as part of our hygiene cleanings, delivering the most modern, gentle, and scientifically precise dental cleaning experience available.

Guided Biofilm Therapy is a modern dental hygiene protocol that focuses on removing biofilm (bacterial plaque) in a gentle, efficient, and highly effective way using specialized technology such as AIRFLOW®, PERIOFLOW®, and PIEZON® instrumentation.
AIRFLOW® is an advanced device that uses a combination of warm water, air, and ultrafine powder (erythritol or glycine) to remove biofilm, stains, and soft deposits from teeth, implants, and gum pockets—without scraping.
Traditional cleanings rely heavily on hand instruments and ultrasonic scalers.GBT/AIRFLOW®:
Yes. The warm-water technology and fine powders make it much less abrasive than traditional methods. Many patients report no sensitivity during treatment.
Absolutely. GBT is designed to safely clean around implants (peri-implantitis prevention), ceramic crowns, veneers, bridges, and orthodontic brackets, without damaging surfaces.
Often, yes—but not always.
Most soft deposits and biofilm are removed using AIRFLOW®.
If calculus (tartar) remains, the clinician uses PIEZON® PS ultrasonic tips, which are more conservative and comfortable than traditional scalers.
Most commonly:
Erythritol (14 μm) → very gentle, safe for all surfaces
Glycine (25 μm) → often used for periodontal pockets
Both powders are much finer and less abrasive than baking soda.
Generally no. AIRFLOW® is warm, gentle, and significantly more comfortable than traditional scraping. Most patients prefer it after trying it once.
New-generation AIRFLOW® devices use controlled warm water and fine powder—much cleaner than older polishing systems. Patients generally describe it as clean and refreshing.
Yes. The powder is ultrafine, and devices include high-efficiency suction systems. However, patients with severe respiratory compromise should discuss with their dentist first.
Very. It removes stains from coffee, tea, wine, and smoking faster and more comfortably than traditional polishing cups.
Most patients benefit from GBT at regular 3-, 4-, or 6-month hygiene intervals, depending on their periodontal status.
