Dentures are removable prosthetic teeth that are used to replace teeth that have been lost due to a variety of factors such as tooth decay, gum disease, injury, etc. Dentures are custom-made dental appliances made to fit the form and size of a person's jaws and sit over the gums to replace lost teeth. These prosthetic teeth are commonly made of acrylic, nylon, or metal and can be fitted to replace several teeth or even the complete jaw.
Types of Dentures
There are two main types of dentures:
Complete Dentures:These dentures are used to replace a complete set of teeth in a jaw.
Partial Dentures:These dentures are used to replace a single tooth or several missing or damaged teeth while some teeth remain.
The development of dentures takes a few weeks and a few appointments. The primary stages are to consult with your dentist or prosthodontist to identify which type of appliance is ideal for you. The procedure is as follows:
A series of imprints of your jaw, measurements of how your jaws fit together, and how much room is there between them are taken.
Models, wax forms, and plastic patterns are created that are accurate replicas of the denture's shape and position. Before the final denture is cast, you will "try on" this model numerous times, and the color, form, and fit will be evaluated.
A final denture is fabricated. As needed, adjustments will be made.
Benefits of Dentures
Polished smile and appearance: Dentures replace not only missing or damaged teeth but also look natural. You can smile freely without the fear of being judged by others. Dentures also help to decrease facial sagging, which can take many years off your appearance.
Increased confidence and self-esteem: Damaged or missing teeth make people self-conscious about their smile, and they usually think twice before opening their mouth. But with dentures, you feel confident about your smile and boost your self-esteem.
Easy to clean: You can maintain thorough oral hygiene practice with minimal effort because dentures are removable. To keep your dentures clean and clear of plaque and germs that can cause gum disease, all you need is a soft-bristled toothbrush and a special denture cleanser.
Other benefits: Dentures allow patients to eat food they would not otherwise be able to eat without teeth. They support optimum biting and chewing, hold your facial tissues firm, etc.
